You cannot just turn crude oil into diesel. That sounds simple, but it is one of the most misunderstood realities of refining.

In this episode of Refining Reality, Bill and Brian break down what actually happens inside a refinery when crude oil moves through a fractional distillation tower. From gases and naphtha to gasoline, kerosene, diesel, gas oil, residual fuel, asphalt, and other heavy products, every barrel creates a full slate of outputs. The trick is not making only one product. The trick is understanding the crude quality, refinery configuration, temperature, product demand, and economics that determine what comes out the other side.

The conversation also explores why all crude barrels are not created equal, how different crude grades create different refining outcomes, and why the logistics after refining matter just as much as the process itself. Trucks, trains, ships, and pipelines all become part of the story once crude is transformed into the fuels and products the world actually uses.

Bill and Brian also discuss how Tracerco’s process diagnostic technologies help refineries and petrochemical facilities see inside towers, vessels, pipes, and equipment without unnecessary shutdowns. When operators can identify problems, verify performance, and improve process efficiency in real time, better data can turn into better decisions, fewer surprises, and more reliable operations.
